Salary: This position offers a salary range of $89,913 – $131,467, with potential for advancement up to $145,141 based on qualifications, equity, and hiring guidelines. Initial salary offers are determined by qualifications, experience, and available budget, and typically do not exceed $131,467.

DESCRIPTION: The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.
The Office of the Attorney General is seeking candidates for the position of Deputy Director of the Mediation Unit. The Deputy Director assists the Director with the management of the Consumer Protection Division’s Mediation Unit, which includes four offices across the State, and manages the Baltimore Office for the Mediation Unit, which consists of seven Mediation Unit Supervisors and staff Mediators, four administrative staff, and more than 20 volunteers, and interns, who help consumers navigate complicated consumer protection issues. The Deputy Director is responsible for training the staff and volunteers on legal matters under the jurisdiction of this Consumer Protection Division (other than health and identity theft matters) and will assist in making determinations on whether to refer matters to enforcement. This position also assists staff with respect to legal issues that arise in the handling and resolution of individual complaints. In addition, this position will assist with responding to public information act requests and will assist in testifying orally or in writing to the legislature on consumer protection issues. The Deputy Director advocates for consumers on both the state and federal levels. The person in this position also mediates complex consumer disputes, supervises the Unit’s consumer hotline and email box, and provides trainings to staff and volunteers. The person in this position will be an integral part of helping approximately 10,000 consumers who file written complaints and more than 40,000 consumers who call or send email inquiries.
The Deputy Director is also responsible for responding to requests for information from consumers and others and providing guidance to the Unit and the public regarding Maryland’s consumer protection laws, including responding to inquiries from agencies and businesses. This position does not involve litigation.
