1.7 Million Dozen Eggs Recalled by California Producer Over Salmonella Risk

Hilmar, CA — August Egg Company has voluntarily recalled 1.7 million dozen shell eggs due to potential Salmonella Enteritidis contamination, as stated in an announcement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The affected eggs, which were distributed under various brand names, were sold in nine states, including California, Arizona, Nevada, Washington, and Illinois.

The eggs that may be contaminated consist of brown cage-free and brown certified organic types, all produced and packaged at August Egg Company’s facility in Hilmar, California. This recall pertains to products sold between February 3 and May 15, 2025, with sell-by dates ranging from March 4 to June 19, 2025.

Consumers are advised to check their egg cartons for the following plant codes and Julian dates:

• P-6562 or CA5330
  
• Julian dates from 032 to 126

These identifiers are printed on the side of each carton. Affected products were sold in fiber or plastic cartons.

Health Risks of Salmonella

Salmonella is a dangerous bacterium that can lead to serious gastrointestinal diseases. Although healthy people usually recover with little treatment, young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of severe complications, such as bloodstream infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.

In a statement, August Egg Company said it has ceased the sale of fresh shell eggs and has been diverting all eggs from its plant to a pasteurization facility for over a month. Pasteurization kills any potential pathogens, including Salmonella.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we are conducting this voluntary recall,” the company said. “Our internal food safety team is conducting a stringent review to prevent this situation from recurring.”
