Today, Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman announced that his office has initiated a lawsuit against Margaret’s Movers, a moving company based in Louisville, following numerous consumer complaints that allege deceptive and unfair business practices.
The lawsuit, which has been filed in Franklin Circuit Court, accuses Margaret’s Movers—owned and run by Margaret and Arthur “Stormy” Weathers—of various infractions, including failing to return items after storage, damaging goods during both moving and storage, stealing customer property, and engaging in misleading advertising. Additionally, the company reportedly did not inform consumers about the locations of their stored items.
“Moving is always stressful, and the Kentuckians who entrusted their precious belongings to this company have been repeatedly let down,” said Attorney General Coleman. “When a company takes advantage of their customers and then refuses to work with our Office to make them whole, we’ll hold them accountable in court.”
Beyond the consumer complaints, the Attorney General’s office claims that Margaret’s Movers has been operating without the necessary state certification since 2015. Even though the company lacks the required household goods certificate from the Kentucky Department of Vehicle Regulation, it has continued to advertise and offer moving services throughout Kentucky, which is against state law.
As part of the preliminary court proceedings, Franklin Circuit Court has issued a temporary restraining order against Margaret’s Movers. This order prevents the company from performing any moving or storage operations, demanding payments from customers, or disposing of customer property or company records while the lawsuit is in progress.
The lawsuit aims to impose civil penalties for breaches of the Kentucky Consumer Protection Act and seeks restitution for the consumers affected. It also holds Margaret Weathers personally accountable for her involvement in the company’s operations.
