Washington, D.C., USA- January 13, 2020: FDA Sign at its headquarters in Washington DC. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA or USFDA) is a federal agency of the USA.
New Hoque & Sons Inc., a seafood distributor located in Maspeth, New York, has announced a nationwide recall of its “Dry Ghoinnya Fish” product after it was discovered to be uneviscerated, which poses a potential risk of botulism poisoning.
The recall impacts 10- to 12-pound clear plastic packages of Hoque brand Dry Ghoinnya Fish, which are marked with an expiration date of May 19, 2025, and feature the UPC code 908172635412. This product was available in retail stores throughout the U.S.
As reported by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, routine inspections indicated that the fish had not been adequately eviscerated—meaning the internal organs were not removed prior to processing. This is a violation of state food safety regulations, as Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria responsible for botulism, is typically found in the viscera (the internal organs of the fish).
Although no illnesses have been reported, officials caution that consuming uneviscerated fish can result in severe and potentially fatal foodborne illnesses. Symptoms of botulism include dizziness, blurred vision, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing or breathing, and muscle weakness. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek medical help immediately.
Consumers who have bought the recalled fish are advised not to consume it and to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
For inquiries, customers can reach New Hoque & Sons Inc. at (718) 391-0992.
This recall is being carried out in collaboration with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
