LOS ANGELES — A new film revisiting one of the most controversial police shootings in recent New York City history is now available for audiences to watch at home. Aftershock: The Nicole P. Bell Story, which had a limited theatrical release in November, is now available for digital rental and purchase.
The documentary-style drama centers not on the 2006 shooting itself, where 23-year-old Sean Bell was killed in a hail of 50 police bullets hours before his wedding, but on the aftermath experienced by his fiancée, Nicole Paultre Bell. The film traces her journey from devastating loss to becoming a public advocate for police accountability.
“This film is deeply personal, not just for Nicole and the Bell family, but for every community that has been impacted by injustice,” said producer Manny Halley in a statement. “We wanted to honor Sean’s legacy by telling the truth with heart, humanity, and urgency.”
The shooting of the unarmed Bell outside a Queens strip club ignited national protests and became a rallying cry for reform. Three detectives involved were eventually acquitted on all charges, a verdict that further fueled public debate about police conduct and justice.
AfterShock aims to humanize the headlines by focusing on Nicole’s perspective. The narrative follows her fight for transparency, her navigation of the legal system, and her dedication to preserving Sean’s memory while raising their two young children.
The film stars Rayven Ferrell as Nicole Paultre Bell and Bentley Green as Sean Bell, with supporting roles from Richard Lawson and Richard T. Jones. It is directed by Alesia “Z” Glidewell, who co-wrote the script with Cas Sigers.
Its digital release coincides with the availability of the film’s official soundtrack on major streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. The movie can be found on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, and Fandango at Home.
The home release came on the 19th anniversary of Bell’s death on November 25, 2006, a timing the distributors say is intentional to keep the conversation about accountability and systemic change current.
