(Source: The Hill) – At least three individuals have lost their lives and five more were admitted to the hospital after a furious mob set ablaze the regional parliament building in Makassar, Indonesia, on August 29, 2025. The violent demonstrations, which were ignited by discontent over lawmakers’ allowances and accusations of police brutality, escalated following the death of a delivery rider, Affan Kurniawan, who was struck by a police armored vehicle during a protest in Jakarta.
The unrest rapidly spread throughout the nation, with rioters also targeting other structures, including regional parliaments in Bandung and Surabaya. Security forces engaged with protesters, deploying tear gas and water cannons. In the midst of rising turmoil, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto called off a scheduled trip to China, while embassies warned their citizens to steer clear of protest zones.
The demonstrations were initially triggered by outrage over a housing allowance for lawmakers, which many considered excessive, and became increasingly violent after Kurniawan’s tragic death. The Indonesian government has pledged to restore order as the protests show no signs of abating.
