Carolina Prime Pet, Inc., based in Lenoir, North Carolina, has announced a recall of 400 bags of “Hollywood Feed Carolina Made Chicken Chips” dog treats due to potential Salmonella contamination. The affected product, which comes in 16-ounce bags, poses a health risk to both pets and humans who come into contact with the contaminated treats.
The recall specifically affects bags marked with the lot number 20051324L2 and an expiration date of November 13, 2025. These bags were distributed to Hollywood Feed stores across multiple states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. The treats were also available for purchase online at Hollywood Feed’s website.
The Salmonella bacteria can cause illness in pets that consume the contaminated treats, with symptoms such as lethargy, diarrhea (including bloody diarrhea), vomiting, and fever. Infected pets may also show a decreased appetite, abdominal pain, or no symptoms at all, but they can still spread the bacteria to humans or other animals.
Humans handling the affected product may also become infected if they do not wash their hands thoroughly after touching the treats or any surfaces that came into contact with them. Symptoms of Salmonella infection in humans include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (possibly bloody), abdominal cramping, and fever. In rare cases, Salmonella can cause more serious health issues such as arterial infections, arthritis, muscle pain, and eye irritation.
No illnesses have been reported at this time, but Carolina Prime Pet, Inc. is urging consumers to return the affected product for a full refund. The recall was initiated after third-party testing revealed contamination in a related, yet unreleased batch of the same product.

Pet owners who have purchased the recalled treats are advised to discontinue use immediately. If your pet exhibits any symptoms of Salmonella infection, contact a veterinarian. If you or a family member develop symptoms after handling the treats, it is important to seek medical attention.
