Disney Branded Television has announced that “An Almost Christmas Story,” directed by David Lowery and produced by five-time Academy Award® winner Alfonso Cuarón, will debut on Disney+ on November 15.
This short film marks the third and final installment in Cuarón’s holiday shorts collection for the streaming service. His previous works, “Le Pupille” and “The Shepherd,” garnered critical acclaim, with the former earning an Oscar® nomination in 2022 and the latter making it onto last year’s shortlist in the Live Action Short Film category.
“An Almost Christmas Story” draws inspiration from true story: the rescue of a tiny owl found in the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree in 2020. The trailer introduces viewers to Moon, an inquisitive young owl who inadvertently becomes trapped in a festive tree destined for Rockefeller Plaza. In his quest to escape the city, Moon encounters Luna, a lost little girl. Together, they embark on an adventure, forging an unexpected friendship as they seek to reunite with their families.
Before its Disney+ release, the animated short film festival circuit featurs events including the Hamptons International Film Festival, Santa Fe International Film Festival, and the Chicago International Film Festival, among others.
The film’s voice cast, including Cary Christopher as Moon, newcomer Estella Madrigal as Luna, and comedy star Jim Gaffigan as Papa Owl. The lineup also features Mamoudou Athie as Pelly, Alex Ross Perry as Dave The Dog, Gianna Joseph as Peaky, Phil Rosenthal as Punt, Natasha Lyonne as Pat, and John C. Reilly as The Folk Singer, who performs four songs, including two original compositions.
Produced by Disney Branded Television and Cuarón’s Esperanto Filmoj, in collaboration with Titmouse and Maere Studios, “An Almost Christmas Story” showcases the talents of a creative team, including Lowery (director, screenplay, and producer), Cuarón (producer and story), Gabriela Rodríguez (producer), Jack Thorne (story and screenplay), Nicholas Ashe Bateman (creative design supervisor), and Daniel Hart (composer).
