Fresno, CA — A federal grand jury has charged former California Superior Court Judge Adolfo Corona, 66, with several offenses, including sexual assault and obstruction of justice, as reported by the U.S. Department of Justice.
The five-count indictment, revealed on Friday, accuses Corona of sexually assaulting a 33-year-old court employee in a courthouse stairwell on March 14, 2024, while he was still on the bench. Authorities also claim that he provided false statements to both the FBI and court officials in an effort to hide the incident.
In addition to the March 2024 assault, the indictment outlines obstruction attempts related to a different allegation involving a 43-year-old court employee. On December 5, 2023, this employee was discovered unconscious and alone in Corona’s chambers after reportedly spending around two hours with him. Prosecutors assert that Corona misled investigators, stating he had left her unattended while he went to get his motorcycle. The indictment further alleges that he tried to modify business records at a motorcycle dealership to back up that false alibi.
If found guilty, Corona could face a maximum of 40 years in prison for the sexual assault charge and up to 20 years for each obstruction-related charge. Sentencing, if it takes place, will be decided by a federal judge following U.S. sentencing guidelines.
Officials stress that an indictment does not equate to a conviction, and Corona is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
