Montgomery, AL — Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall has announced the conviction of Tiffany Alexander Fields, who was the former Director of Nursing at a nursing home in the Montgomery area, for stealing hydrocodone tablets that were meant for the patients she was responsible for.
Fields entered a guilty plea to a single count of Theft of Property in the Second Degree before Judge Monet Gaines of the Montgomery Circuit Court. As part of her sentence, she will spend 18 months in the community corrections program under the Department of Corrections and has also given up her nursing license in Alabama as part of the plea deal.
This conviction comes after an investigation conducted by the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit (MFCU), which was initiated following a referral from the Alabama Department of Public Health. The investigation revealed that between November 2022 and April 2023, Fields illicitly acquired hydrocodone by utilizing pre-signed prescription pads that had been left by the medical director of the nursing home. She sent fake prescriptions to the pharmacy via fax, received the narcotics from the pharmacy’s courier, and kept them for her own use.
“Those entrusted with the care of patients must be held to the highest standard,” said Attorney General Marshall. “This conviction reflects our unwavering commitment to protecting vulnerable patients and holding bad actors accountable.”
The case was prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Nathan Mays of the MFCU, a division of the Attorney General’s Office. The unit is partially funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General, receiving 75% of its $1.5 million budget for the 2024 fiscal year.
