NEWARK, N.J. — A former TD Bank employee from Florida pleaded guilty Wednesday to federal charges for his role in a scheme that laundered more than $5.5 million in suspected drug proceeds to Colombia.
Leonardo Ayala, 25, of Homestead, admitted in U.S. District Court in Newark to conspiring to launder monetary instruments and receiving bribes as a bank employee. According to court documents, from June to November 2023, Ayala exploited his position to open fraudulent accounts and facilitate thousands of illicit ATM withdrawals.
Prosecutors said Ayala issued over 150 debit cards to shell companies and manually unblocked cards that the bank had flagged for suspicious activity. These cards were then used to make more than 12,000 ATM withdrawals in Colombia, moving approximately $5.5 million out of the United States. In return, Ayala accepted over $6,000 in bribes paid in cash and via a peer-to-peer payment app.
“Individuals who abuse positions of trust within our financial institutions to facilitate illicit activity undermine the integrity of the entire banking system,” said Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division in a statement.
Ayala faces a maximum of 20 years in prison for the money laundering conspiracy charge and up to 30 years for receipt of bribes. His sentencing is scheduled for June 11.
