Prime Video has announced the exclusive worldwide release of the highly anticipated Colombian film Pimpinero: Blood and Oil on Friday, November 22, 2024. The film will be available in over 240 countries and territories, following its official selection and world premiere at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The film has also been featured at major global festivals including the Rio International Film Festival, Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia, and the New York Latino Film Festival, among others.
Directed by Andrés Baiz, known for his work on Narcos and Griselda, Pimpinero: Blood and Oil is set in the harsh desert landscape that straddles the border between Colombia and Venezuela, where gasoline smugglers known as “pimpineros” risk their lives to transport illegal fuel between the two countries. The story follows Juan (Alejandro Speitzer), the youngest of three brothers involved in the dangerous trade. When Juan is coerced into working for a powerful and sinister rival, the dark and brutal realities of the smuggling world are revealed, leading to tragic consequences. Juan’s girlfriend, Diana (Laura Osma), embarks on a perilous journey to uncover the shocking secrets of the business, setting the stage for a tense and gripping narrative.
The film stars an impressive cast, including Alejandro Speitzer (La Cabeza de Joaquin Murrieta), Laura Osma (Goles en contra), Alberto Guerra (Griselda), and the multi-award-winning musician Juanes, making his acting debut. Baiz’s return to filmmaking with Pimpinero: Blood and Oil brings his trademark storytelling style, as seen in his previous hits like Narcos and The Hidden Face, to a new, thrilling project that explores universal themes of borders, family loyalty, and the dangerous lure of power.
Written by María Camila Arias (Birds of Passage), the film is produced by Dynamo, with Andrés Calderón (La Cabeza de Joaquin Murrieta, Narcos) serving as producer and Cyndi Rojas (Mile 22) as associate producer. Baiz himself also served as a writer and producer on the film.
The launch of Pimpinero: Blood and Oil adds to Prime Video’s growing catalog of international Originals, which already includes global hits like My Fault (Culpa Mía), Maxton Hall: The World Between Us, and the Golden Globe-winning Argentina 1985. Upcoming releases include Your Fault (Culpa Tuya), Freedom, and Like a Dragon: Yakuza, further solidifying Prime Video’s commitment to delivering a diverse array of content to a global audience.
Pimpinero: Blood and Oil is set to captivate audiences with its thrilling exploration of crime, love, and family amidst the backdrop of one of the most perilous and politically charged regions in Latin America.
