Washington, D.C., USA- January 13, 2020: FDA Sign at its headquarters in Washington DC. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA or USFDA) is a federal agency of the USA.
Carson, CA — Southwind Foods, LLC has voluntarily recalled several frozen shrimp products across various brand names due to the potential presence of Cesium-137, a radioactive contaminant. This recall was made in collaboration with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which is currently looking into possible contamination in shrimp sourced from an Indonesian supplier.
The products affected, which are marketed under the Sand Bar, Arctic Shores, Best Yet, Great American, and First Street brands, were distributed to retailers and wholesalers in Alabama, Arizona, California, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia, and Washington between July 17 and August 8, 2025.
Cesium-137 (Cs-137) is a synthetic radioactive isotope. Although trace amounts can be found naturally in the environment, prolonged exposure through dietary intake may elevate cancer risk, as stated by health authorities.
No illnesses have been reported to date.
The recall encompasses a range of frozen raw and cooked shrimp items available in various sizes and packaging, identified by specific lot numbers and UPC codes. Affected consumers are urged not to eat the shrimp and should either dispose of it properly or return it to the retailer for a full refund.
The FDA is currently investigating the source of the contamination, which is thought to originate from shrimp processed by PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati (BMS Foods) in Indonesia. The agency is looking into possible exposure from contaminated shipping containers and shrimp products.
Consumers with inquiries regarding the recall can contact Southwind Foods at 1-323-262-8222, available Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. PT. A comprehensive list of the affected products and their lot numbers can be found on the FDA’s recall alert page.
