(Source: AP) Tens of thousands of Spaniards gathered in the eastern city of Valencia on Saturday to demand the resignation of regional president Carlos Mazón over his administration’s handling of the catastrophic floods that devastated the area last week. The floods, which struck on October 29, left more than 220 dead and many more missing, with the destruction continuing to impact the region.
Widespread Anger and Protests
The flood disaster has not only caused tragic loss of life but also sparked widespread anger at both regional and national leaders. Last weekend, Mazón, along with Spain’s King Felipe VI and Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, faced public fury when they visited flood-stricken areas. Protesters in the affected regions hurled mud at the royal and government officials as they toured the devastation.
The ongoing protests in Valencia are part of a growing wave of discontent, as many Spaniards are demanding accountability for what they see as a failure of leadership in the face of one of the country’s worst natural disasters in recent years.
