After Every Election Cycle, Regretful Voters Reflect on Their Choices
After every election cycle, there are voters who regret their votes. From Bush to Obama, Obama to Trump, and then Biden back to Trump, the political pendulum swings, and with it, the allegiances of many Americans. Some voters switch parties, a testament to the beauty of American democracy—open to either side, voting with confidence, believing the elected president will look after the interests of the average American, regardless of race, under the ideal of “One Nation under God.”
But alas, many Americans now find themselves in a situation they struggle to comprehend. An era of fear, uncertainty, helplessness, and confusion has taken hold. With the rise of Make America Great Again (MAGA), the movement that launched President Trump into the limelight, many of its members have come to realize that its foundation was built on lies, fear, and misinformation. This rude awakening is slowly encroaching on the hearts of MAGA supporters, and the consequences are damning.
From forced mass deportations affecting communities across the country to millions facing the possibility of losing their health insurance, the fallout is widespread. The disrespect shown to federal employees, the pardoning of January 6 rioters, and the dismantling of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs—which have been instrumental in supporting disabled individuals, women, Black Americans, the elderly, veterans, and others—are just a few examples. The list is extensive, and we cannot cover everything here. But let’s return to where we began.
Regret Among Trump/MAGA/Republican Voters
Several Trump/MAGA/Republican voters (though not all) now regret their votes, not only because of what they stand to lose but also because of what has become of the nation. Families are divided, and many have been radicalized to hate their neighbors, as if waiting for an opportunity to reveal their true feelings. This has led to acts of anger and punishment directed at neighbors or strangers, often without understanding or justification.
One example is a student at Temple University who harassed two men, taking the law into his own hands. The story did not end well for him, as he has been charged with… Unfortunately, this is just one instance, and we have no idea what else is happening across the country. Vulnerable individuals are being taken advantage of, all because of a political party that was once a symbol of law and order but is now allegedly a source of disarray and misinformation.
A Glimmer of Hope
Amidst this confusion, there are brave men and women who have realized the error of their ways. They admit they were misled by the promises of Donald Trump and are now coming to terms with their mistakes. Many fear mockery and may never openly admit they were wrong to vote for Trump. This is not to say we disrespect their decision to vote for him, but the consequences are undeniable. For instance, the price of eggs has risen significantly just two months into Trump’s administration.
Organizations like Leaving Maga, founded by Rich Logis, aim to empower individuals to leave the MAGA movement and share their stories. The organization fosters reconciliation with friends and family and develops leaders to help others break away. In a letter on his site, Logis wrote:
“Starting in 2021, I realized I had been mistaken. It took me a full year to finally break away. During that time, I came to understand that MAGA is sustained by a series of myths intended to create perpetual feelings of desperation and panic. Succumbing to these predatory myths does not mean you are unintelligent, weak, or lack good character and morals. I have a Bachelor’s degree, have been a working professional my entire life, am a family man, and consider myself a relatively honest and intelligent person. I think the same about you.
I understand the reasons you have for supporting MAGA. And I know many of us traveled different paths to get there. I gravitated to Donald Trump because I have always been suspicious of our two-party system, and I saw him as the right man at the right time.”
Logis, a former MAGA supporter, aims to provide a safe space for others to admit their mistakes, forgive themselves, and stand with the rest of society against the harm Trump has caused.
Another platform for reflection is the hashtag #FAFO, where people share videos and stories of MAGA and Trump supporters realizing they voted away their rights in exchange for situations far worse. Our editors have gathered some of these videos to share with you.
A Call for Reflection
We would like to conclude by emphasizing that this article is not meant to mock anyone. We celebrate that our nation is a diverse tapestry of backgrounds, races, dynamics, and religions. However, the lesson here is clear: we must all be careful about who we vote for, as the consequences can be so catastrophic that we may never recover from the fallout.
