MONTPELIER — Vermont’s Attorney General, Charity Clark, has come to a settlement with Angi, the home services platform previously known as Angie’s List, regarding issues related to deceptive marketing practices that implied Vermont contractors on its platform were ‘certified’ — a statement that contradicts state law.
As part of the agreement, Angi will cease using the term ‘Angi Certified Pro’ and will pay $100,000 to the State of Vermont. This settlement follows concerns raised by the Attorney General’s Office that the label suggested a credentialing process or government endorsement that is not present in Vermont.
“It’s vitally important that consumers are not misled by marketing terms that imply confidence or credentials that contractors do not have,” said Attorney General Clark. “I’m pleased with Angi’s willingness to stop using terms that conflict with, or confuse, Vermont law.”
Misleading Certification Claims
Before 2025, Angi labeled many of the 300+ Vermont residential contractors on its site as “certified pros,” even though: Vermont has no certification process for contractors — only a registration requirement under Title 26. Angi does not operate a formal certification program and cannot vouch for the qualifications of contractors using its platform.
Terms of the Settlement
As part of the resolution, Angi has agreed to:
- Cease use of the term “Angi Certified Pro” or any similar language implying governmental credentials;
- Clearly direct users to official state resources for confirming contractor registration in Vermont;
- Inform all residential contractors based in Vermont on your platform about their legal duty to register with the Vermont Secretary of State’s Office of Professional Regulation;
- Make a payment of $100,000 to the State of Vermont.
