If you’ve just bought a can of Parashore Pear Slices from your nearby grocery store, it may be wise to re-examine your pantry. W.W. Industrial Group, Inc., located in New York, has announced an urgent nationwide recall of its Parashore Pear Slices in Juice (15 oz cans) because of potentially hazardous levels of lead and cadmium—two heavy metals that are recognized for posing significant health threats.
Regular testing conducted by the Maryland Department of Health, under the FDA’s Laboratory Flexible Funding Model program, uncovered higher levels of these harmful substances in a particular product lot.
The contaminated lot is labeled:
- Lot #: 3700/01172 6122J
- Production Date: 02/19/2024
- Best By: 02/19/2027
- UPC: 704817164237
So far, no illnesses or adverse reactions have been reported, but the recall is being taken seriously as a precautionary step to protect consumers.

Why This Matters
Although trace levels of lead and cadmium are frequently found in the environment—and can even be present in minor amounts from food, air, or water—they turn harmful when consumed in greater amounts or over an extended period.
Symptoms of heavy metal poisoning can vary, including:

- Abdominal pain
- Vomiting
- Lethargy
- Mood changes
- Seizures
- Coma (in severe cases)
Infants, young children, and pregnant women are particularly at risk, as exposure to lead and cadmium can result in developmental delays, learning disabilities, and lower IQ—frequently without any obvious immediate symptoms of illness.
The impacted pear slices were distributed via Grocery Outlet stores in California and throughout the United States. If you’ve recently visited these stores and purchased canned fruit, please take a moment to verify your purchase.
