MACUNGIE, PA — A man from Pennsylvania has been sentenced to spend the next thirty years in prison for the sexual exploitation of a child, a case that has left both law enforcement and the community in shock.
George Travis Woodfield, 41, from Macungie, received his sentence on Monday, July 28, which includes 30 years in federal prison followed by a lifetime of supervised release. This comes after he pleaded guilty to transporting a minor across state lines for the purpose of sexual abuse and for accessing child pornography with the intent to view it. Additionally, he has been ordered to pay $12,000 in restitution to his victim.
This sentence is part of a broader federal initiative aimed at combating child exploitation, known as Project Safe Childhood, spearheaded by the Justice Department.
A Calculated Act of Abuse
Court documents indicate that the abuse commenced in November 2018, when Woodfield organized an overnight trip to New York City with an 11-year-old child. After a day filled with sightseeing, he proceeded to sexually abuse the child in his hotel room.
However, the alarming behavior did not end there. Investigators uncovered that from September 2015 to July 2024, Woodfield was actively searching for and accessing materials related to child sexual abuse, including images of prepubescent children.
“Child sexual abuse is a depraved criminal act that harms the most innocent among us,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew R. Galeotti. “This defendant took a child across state lines with the express intent of abusing that child… We will swiftly bring to justice any individual who commits these horrific crimes.”
Federal Agents: “We Will Not Rest”
“Let today’s sentencing send a message: if you prey upon our most vulnerable, you will be found and you will be brought to justice,” said Wayne A. Jacobs, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Philadelphia Field Office. “This case is a powerful testament to the unwavering dedication of our personnel and law enforcement partners.”
Assistant U.S. Attorney Rebecca J. Kulik, along with CEOS Trial Attorneys Jessica L. Urban and Jennifer Toritto Leonardo, prosecuted the case.
Woodfield’s sentencing occurs against a backdrop of increasing worries about child exploitation crimes across the country. In 2024, the FBI documented thousands of incidents involving online predators, who frequently operate from behind screens to manipulate and harm children.
“This sentence prevents Woodfield from causing further harm and provides his victim with justice,” said U.S. Attorney David Metcalf for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. “While no punishment can undo the damage, we hope it sends a clear message to other would-be offenders.”
