Jamaica, NY – Haifa Smoked Fish has announced a voluntary nationwide recall of its well-loved Cold Smoked Salmon and Cold Smoked Seabass because of possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a dangerous bacterium that presents a significant health threat—particularly to young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with compromised immune systems.
What’s Being Recalled?
The affected products include:
- Cold Smoked Salmon (8 oz.) — Lot #219
- Cold Smoked Seabass (8 oz.) — Lot #212
Both products were distributed across the U.S. through direct deliveries to retail stores and distributors. They are vacuum-sealed and packaged on a paper board with flexible plastic.
Health Risks Uncovered
Listeria monocytogenes poses a significant threat, especially to at-risk groups. While those in good health might only suffer from mild symptoms—like fever, nausea, stomach cramps, and diarrhea—the bacteria can result in miscarriages, stillbirths, and severe infections for vulnerable populations.
Currently, there have been no reported illnesses associated with the recalled items. The contamination was detected during a standard inspection by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, which confirmed the presence of Listeria in certain lots of salmon and seabass.
What Should You Do?
If you have purchased either product:
- Do not consume it.
- Return the item to the store for a full refund.
