SEATTLE — Seafood company AquaStar (USA) Corp has voluntarily recalled a limited batch of frozen shrimp products due to potential exposure to very low levels of cesium-137 (Cs-137), a radioactive substance, the company announced on October 17, 2025.
The shrimp, imported from Indonesia, was distributed under several brand names, including AquaStar, Best Yet, Waterfront Bistro, and Publix. While none of the recalled products tested positive for Cs-137, the company issued the recall out of an abundance of caution.
To date, no illnesses have been reported, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is aware of the recall.
What Is Cs-137?
Cesium-137 is a man-made radioactive isotope that can be present in the environment at low levels. Higher concentrations may occur in regions with known environmental contamination. Prolonged exposure to elevated levels of Cs-137 can pose health risks, but AquaStar emphasized that the exposure in this case, if any, would be extremely low.
Consumer Guidance
Customers who purchased any of the affected shrimp products are advised not to consume them. They should either dispose of the product safely or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
Consumers with questions about the recall can contact AquaStar at 1-800-331-3440.
