Netflix is set to stream the NFL’s marquee Christmas Day games this year, but concerns linger after past technical hiccups during live events.
On December 25, 2024, Netflix will air two major NFL games: the Super Bowl LVIII-winning Kansas City Chiefs will face off against the Pittsburgh Steelers, followed by a matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and the Houston Texans. In a significant move, Netflix is partnering with the NFL to deliver these high-profile games exclusively to its global audience. The streaming platform, which has made strides in live sports broadcasting, will also showcase Beyoncé as the halftime performer during the Ravens-Texans game, adding extra star power to the event.
However, some fans are feeling uneasy, especially after Netflix’s live-streaming of the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson boxing match earlier this month was plagued by technical issues. Many viewers reported constant buffering, freezing, and disruptions, leading to widespread criticism of the broadcast. Some even labeled the experience “unwatchable” as the technical glitches overshadowed the anticipated event. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos acknowledged the challenges during a conference, explaining that the platform had pushed internet service providers to their limits, leading to problems that affected the entire broadcast.
Despite the backlash, NFL officials are optimistic about the Christmas Day games on Netflix. Hans Schroeder, NFL Executive Vice President of Media Distribution, assured that the production quality of the games would be top-notch. He emphasized that CBS, renowned for its live sports coverage, would handle the game production. “We are incredibly confident in Netflix’s preparations,” Schroeder said, addressing concerns about streaming issues. “Everything we’ve seen suggests their plan is well-prepared.”
Netflix’s venture into live sports began in 2023 with the release of Quarterback, a hit series offering an in-depth look at the NFL’s top players. Since then, the streaming giant has expanded its relationship with the NFL, releasing Receiver in July, following the journeys of five top pass-catchers during the 2023 season. The NFL’s Christmas Day games are part of Netflix’s three-season deal with the league, which also includes games in 2025 and 2026.
Schroeder expressed excitement about Netflix becoming a key player in the global broadcast of NFL games. “We couldn’t be more excited to partner with Netflix,” he said. “NFL games on Christmas have become a tradition, and partnering with Netflix, a service whose biggest day of the year is typically this holiday, is the perfect combination to grow this event globally.”
While Netflix’s commitment to live sports continues to grow, the technical challenges during the Tyson-Paul fight are still fresh in many minds. The event, which drew massive attention, was marred by constant disruptions, with even Netflix’s commentators apologizing on air. The glitches were so severe that the official broadcast was temporarily deemed “unwatchable” by many frustrated viewers.
Nevertheless, Netflix’s willingness to address its streaming challenges head-on has earned the support of NFL officials. “We are incredibly well-prepared for a great day on Christmas,” Schroeder added, signaling that the streaming giant has worked extensively to ensure smooth coverage for its upcoming NFL broadcasts.
For fans eagerly anticipating the NFL’s Christmas Day games, the stakes are high. While the technical mishaps of the Tyson-Paul event remain a concern, the NFL’s longstanding holiday tradition combined with Netflix’s investment in improving its live sports infrastructure has many hopeful for a successful broadcast.
With millions of eyes set to tune in, both the NFL and Netflix are banking on a smooth experience—and perhaps a memorable holiday season for fans across the globe.
