Washington, D.C., USA- January 13, 2020: FDA Sign at its headquarters in Washington DC. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA or USFDA) is a federal agency of the USA.
Consumers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas are urged to inspect their refrigerators following Albertsons Companies’ announcement of a broader voluntary recall of certain tuna salad items available at Albertsons, Randalls, and Tom Thumb locations.
This action is taken due to a possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes—a dangerous bacterium that can lead to severe health issues—associated with the breadcrumbs included in the tuna salad provided by Reser’s Fine Foods.
Why the Recall?
Reser’s Fine Foods, a prominent provider of prepared meals, has recently launched a recall after finding that an ingredient in their tuna salad—the breadcrumbs—could be tainted with Listeria. Albertsons and its associated stores quickly took action to pull potentially impacted products from their shelves.
What Is Listeria monocytogenes?
While healthy individuals may only experience temporary symptoms such as fever, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort, Listeria poses a much greater risk to:
- Pregnant women (where it can cause miscarriages or stillbirths)
- Young children
- The elderly
- Individuals with weakened immune systems
- Infections can become severe and even fatal in some cases.
What Should You Do?
If you purchased tuna salad items from Albertsons, Randalls, or Tom Thumb in the affected states, do not consume them. Instead:
Dispose of the products safely
Or return them to the store for a full refund
The FDA strongly advises consumers to meticulously clean and sanitize all containers, utensils, or surfaces that might have been in contact with the recalled tuna salad to avoid cross-contamination. Listeria is known to persist in refrigerated environments and can easily transfer to other food items.
No Illnesses Reported—Yet
Thankfully, there have been no reported injuries or illnesses following the announcement. However, consumers who are experiencing any symptoms or are worried about potential exposure should reach out to a healthcare provider without delay.
