An ongoing investigation into a multistate outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 has raised concerns among health officials, with many affected individuals reporting consumption of McDonald’s Quarter Pounder burgers. While no specific ingredient has been confirmed as the source, investigators are closely examining whether the slivered onions or beef patties used in these burgers may be the culprits.
In response to the outbreak, McDonald’s has temporarily halted the use of slivered onions and Quarter Pounder beef patties in affected states, which include Colorado, Kansas, Utah, Wyoming, and parts of Idaho, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. Notably, diced onions and other types of beef patties at McDonald’s have not been linked to this incident.
Health officials are urging anyone who has consumed these products and is experiencing symptoms—including severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea, or vomiting—to seek medical attention promptly. Some infections can lead to severe complications, including hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and other serious health issues.
The investigation is being led by the FDA, USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), and the CDC, in collaboration with state and local health departments. Preliminary evidence suggests that slivered onions served on Quarter Pounders may be a likely source of contamination, and the FDA is working to confirm this while assessing whether these onions were distributed to other businesses.
As the situation develops, McDonald’s is taking proactive measures to ensure customer safety, including the temporary removal of the implicated ingredients. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
