Springfield, MA — Big Y Foods has issued a voluntary recall of certain made-to-order subs, wraps, and paninis sold at select stores in Massachusetts and Connecticut due to a potential Salmonella contamination, the company announced in coordination with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The affected products were made and sold on May 20 and May 21, 2025, at the retail Kitchen Department of select Big Y locations. These items were not prepackaged, but were prepared upon request at the store’s sandwich service line.
Contamination Source Traced to Sliced Cucumbers
The recall was prompted after Big Y was notified by its ingredient supplier, Smartcuts, that sliced cucumbers used in the sandwiches may be contaminated. These cucumbers were part of a larger outbreak linked to Bedner Growers Inc., which is currently under investigation for a multi-state Salmonella outbreak.
As a precaution, Big Y immediately halted sandwich line operations, disposed of all potentially affected products, and thoroughly sanitized the impacted areas in the listed stores.

Potential Health Risks
Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause serious—and in some cases, fatal—infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, or individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms may include:
