(Source: Hypebeast) Cartoon Network’s iconic website has officially shut down after 32 years of operation, marking a significant shift in the channel’s strategy as it embraces the modern streaming landscape. The closure of the beloved digital hub, which has been a nostalgic playground for generations of fans, is part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s broader cost-cutting measures and consolidation of digital platforms.
While the website is no longer operational, the Cartoon Network channel remains active. Visitors to the website will now be redirected to Max, Warner Bros. Discovery’s flagship streaming service, where fans can continue to enjoy the channel’s iconic programming. A representative for Cartoon Network assured fans, saying, “Fans can continue to interact with Cartoon Network via the Cartoon Network app and social platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook.”
The CartoonNetwork.com site was once a digital haven filled with interactive games, exclusive show content, and fan-favorite programming, including Iyanu: Child of Wonder, Summer Camp Island, Dexter’s Laboratory, The Amazing World Of Gumball, Craig of the Creek, Steven Universe, The Powerpuff Girls, Ben 10, We Baby Bears, and Teen Titans Go!. The shutdown marks the end of an era for those whose childhoods were shaped by the channel’s unique online offerings, though the network’s shows are still available on streaming platforms.
“Since the combination that created Warner Bros. Discovery, we have transformed our business and improved our financial position while providing world class entertainment to global audiences,” said Warner Bros. Discovery President and CEO, David Zaslav. “We continue to prioritize ensuring our Global Linear Networks business is well positioned to continue to drive free cash flow, while our Streaming & Studios business focuses on driving growth by telling the world’s most compelling stories. Our new corporate structure better aligns our organization and enhances our flexibility with potential future strategic opportunities across an evolving media landscape, help us build on our momentum and create opportunities as we evaluate all avenues to deliver significant shareholder value.”
This move aligns with Warner Bros. Discovery’s goal to streamline its digital services and expand the reach of Cartoon Network’s content through platforms like Max. However, the closure has stirred some confusion and rumors. According to Reuters, in July 2023, an animation workers’ group called “Animation Workers Ignited” sparked false reports that Cartoon Network itself was shutting down after they posted the hashtag #RIPCartoonNetwork on social media. These posts, which included messages about the end of an era, were misinterpreted by some as a claim that the entire network was closing. Both the network and the advocacy group quickly clarified that these rumors were unfounded.
The confusion stemmed partly from the closure of a historic Cartoon Network studio building in Burbank, California, which had been part of a merger with Warner Bros. animator groups. The studio’s closure, coupled with the shift to a new location, fueled speculation about the future of the brand. However, Cartoon Network reassured fans that the network itself remains operational and that the website’s closure was a part of a broader corporate restructuring.
While the shutdown of the website may feel like the end of a chapter for many fans, Cartoon Network continues to thrive as part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming and digital strategy, ensuring its legacy lives on for future generations.
