Attorneys are investigating the potential for a class action lawsuit against New Era Life Insurance following a data breach that compromised sensitive personal information of policyholders, employees, and agents. The breach, which occurred between December 9 and December 18, 2024, has led to concerns over privacy and the handling of personal data by the insurance company.
New Era Life Insurance, which operates under a family of companies that includes New Era Life Insurance Company of the Midwest and Philadelphia American Life Insurance Company, provides a variety of insurance products, such as life insurance, annuities, Medicare supplements, and accident insurance. The company has acknowledged that an unauthorized individual gained access to its network, exposing the personal data of numerous individuals.
According to a notice from Maine’s Attorney General’s office, the breach involved the theft of highly sensitive data, including names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, Medicare ID numbers, health insurance policy numbers, treatment and diagnosis information, and more. The data exposed also included financial account numbers for independent agents, further deepening the scope of the breach.
In response to the incident, New Era Life Insurance has begun notifying affected individuals and will continue to distribute notification letters as long as it has sufficient contact information. By January 31, 2025, the company completed its investigation into the scope of the breach.
Attorneys working with ClassAction.org are now reaching out to individuals who received notification letters, seeking to determine whether a class action lawsuit can be filed. A class action could provide compensation for affected individuals, including for loss of privacy, time spent dealing with the breach, and out-of-pocket costs incurred as a result of the incident.
“If your information was compromised in the breach, we want to hear from you,” stated one of the attorneys involved in the investigation. “Victims may be entitled to compensation for the distress and expenses caused by this breach. A successful case could also force New Era Life Insurance to take stronger measures to protect customer data in the future.”
The investigation is ongoing, and those impacted by the breach are encouraged to contact the legal team for more information on their potential eligibility for the class action lawsuit.
