Handsome Brook Farms has issued a voluntary recall of 10,800 retail units of Kirkland Signature Organic Pasture Raised 24-Count Eggs due to potential contamination with Salmonella. The recall affects eggs sold in Costco stores in several states and comes as a precautionary measure to protect consumers from potential health risks.
The eggs, which were distributed to Costco locations in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee, may carry Salmonella, a bacteria that can cause serious infections. Young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to these infections. Symptoms of Salmonella infection in healthy individuals can include fever, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the bacteria can spread to the bloodstream and lead to more severe conditions, such as infected aneurysms, endocarditis, and arthritis.
The affected product is the Kirkland Signature Organic Pasture Raised 24-Count Eggs with the UPC code 9661910680. The recalled eggs are packaged in plastic cartons labeled with the Kirkland Signature brand name. Consumers are advised to check for the Julian code 327 and the “Use By” date of January 5, 2025, which are printed on the side of the carton. No other products from Handsome Brook Farms are affected by this recall.
The recall was initiated after the company discovered that eggs not intended for retail distribution had been packaged and shipped under the Kirkland Signature brand. Handsome Brook Farms is working to strengthen its supply chain controls and retrain staff to prevent similar issues in the future.
As of now, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled eggs. The recall is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
