ProPublica reveals that a dozen states that pursued legal action against Santander Consumer USA for high-interest loans have largely ignored similar complaints against Exeter Finance, another lender linked to predatory practices. Both companies were run by the same group of executives. In 2020, attorneys general from nearly three dozen states reached a settlement with Santander, which had been accused of issuing loans to borrowers it knew couldn’t afford them. Despite these serious allegations against Santander, complaints about Exeter, which operates under the same leadership, have been largely overlooked. ProPublica’s review of consumer complaints indicates minimal action from state officials, even as customers reported comparable predatory lending practices.
