H5N1 can be transmitted to animals that consume contaminated products. Pets exhibiting these symptoms should be taken to a veterinarian immediately.
While no human infections have been reported, individuals handling the recalled products are also at risk. The virus can infect humans if it enters the eyes, nose, or mouth. Symptoms in humans may include eye redness or irritation, cough, sore throat, fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal issues such as nausea or vomiting. Anyone experiencing these symptoms after contact with the product should seek medical attention and notify their local health department.
Consumers are advised to stop feeding the recalled product to their pets and dispose of it immediately. Pet owners should thoroughly wash their hands after handling the product and sanitize any surfaces, utensils, or bowls that may have come into contact with it.
The recall was initiated after sampling by the Oregon and Washington State Departments of Agriculture detected the H5N1 virus in both affected cats and the recalled products. Wild Coast Raw is working closely with state authorities to address the source of the contamination and prevent further risks to public and animal health.
