Washington, D.C., USA- January 13, 2020: FDA Sign at its headquarters in Washington DC. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA or USFDA) is a federal agency of the USA.
Apna Wholesale Inc. has issued a recall for its 7oz and 14oz packages of “Paras Premium Golden Raisins” after it was discovered that the product contains undeclared sulfites, posing a risk to individuals with severe sulfite sensitivity. The recalled raisins were distributed in New York and Massachusetts through Apna Bazar Farmers Market retail stores.
The affected products are packaged in clear plastic with UPC codes 818051014811 (7oz) and 818051014828 (14oz). While no illnesses have been reported, consumers with sulfite allergies or asthma are advised to avoid consuming these raisins, as even small amounts—10 milligrams—can cause severe allergic reactions, including anaphylactic shock. The recalled raisins were found to contain 56.8 milligrams of sulfites per serving.
The recall was initiated following routine testing by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, which discovered the presence of sulfites that were not listed on the product’s label. The company is urging consumers to return the affected products to the store for a refund or dispose of them.
Apna Wholesale is taking steps to address the labeling issue and prevent further occurrences.
