STATESVILLE, NC — April 15, 2025 — Blue Ridge Beef has issued a voluntary recall of its Puppy Mix and Kitten Mix pet food products due to contamination with Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes, which can pose serious health risks to both animals and humans. The recall, announced on April 11, 2025, affects over 2,400 pounds of raw pet food sold in several northeastern and southern states.

The affected products include:

Product Size Lot Numbers
Blue Ridge Beef Puppy Mix2 lbN25 1230
Blue Ridge Beef Kitten Mix2 lbN26 0114

The lot numbers can be found stamped on the metal clips at the ends of the packaging chubs. The recalled items were distributed between January 3 and January 24, 2025, and sold in retail stores located in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Tennessee, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin.

Health Risks to Pets and Humans

Contaminated pet food can cause serious infections in pets, with symptoms including lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea (possibly bloody), fever, and decreased appetite. Even healthy pets can become carriers of these bacteria, potentially spreading illness to humans or other animals.

Humans handling the contaminated products are also at risk, especially if they fail to thoroughly wash their hands after contact. Symptoms of Salmonella or Listeria infections in people include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. In severe cases, the bacteria can lead to life-threatening complications such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and meningitis.

The recall follows a customer complaint involving an animal illness. The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets collected samples on March 20, and on April 1, the North Carolina Department of Agriculture confirmed the presence of both Salmonella and Listeria in the products.

Consumers are urged to:

  • Return the affected products to the place of purchase, or
  • Destroy them in a way that children, pets, and wildlife cannot access
  • Do not donate, sell, or feed the recalled products to any animals
  • Thoroughly wash and sanitize any surfaces, containers, utensils, or hands that have come into contact with the food
