A few days ago, the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) transformed its campus into a runway for the annual Future of Fashion show, presented by Macy’s. The event spotlighted 82 bold, innovative designs by 67 graduating students from FIT’s Fashion Design BFA program, offering a glimpse into the future of the industry.
From sustainable materials to cultural heritage and cutting-edge technology, the collections reflected deeply personal stories across five specializations: knitwear, sportswear, intimate apparel, children’s wear, and special occasion. “Our students don’t just take final exams—they create art that comes alive on the runway,” said FIT President Joyce F. Brown. “This show proves what happens when passion meets training.”
A star-studded panel of judges, including The New York Times fashion critic Vanessa Friedman, designer Phillip Lim, and Macy’s design director Hollis L’Estrange Daniels, handpicked the standout looks. For the fourth year, Macy’s sponsored the event through its Mission Every One initiative, awarding two top talents: Khoboso Nale, whose winning capsule collection will be produced and sold under Macy’s BAR III label, and Allison Margaret Smith, honored for her powerfully inspired design.
“Partnering with FIT allows us to uplift emerging designers who’ll shape the industry,” said Emily Erusha-Hilleque, Macy’s SVP of Private Brands. Dean Troy Richards added that Macy’s mentorship bridges classroom learning and real-world success.
Throughout the semester, students refined their work with guidance from industry heavyweights like designer Sally LaPointe and Theory’s Dushane Noble. Thirteen Critic Award winners were also recognized for excellence, including Alexandra Dayton (sportswear) and Yuval Sorotzkin (special occasion).
With alumni like Calvin Klein and Nina Garcia, FIT continues to be a launchpad for fashion’s brightest. As these graduates step into the spotlight, one thing’s clear: the future of design is in bold, creative hands.
