Gaines Pet Treats LLC, based in Birmingham, Alabama, has voluntarily recalled 204 bags of its Gaines Family Farmstead Chicken Chips for Dogs due to the potential risk of Salmonella contamination. The company issued the recall on November 22, 2024, after a third-party test identified the contamination in a related, unreleased lot of the same product.
The affected product is packaged in 5-ounce bags and marked with the lot number 20061124 and an expiration date of 12/11/25. This recall is specific to this lot, and no illnesses have been reported so far in connection with the product. The recalled treats were distributed to small independent pet retailers in Alabama, Florida, and Georgia, as well as through online retailers.
Salmonella Risk to Pets and Humans
Salmonella is a bacterial pathogen that can pose serious health risks to both animals and humans. Pets consuming the contaminated treats may show symptoms including lethargy, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), vomiting, fever, decreased appetite, and abdominal pain. Infected pets can also become carriers of the bacteria, potentially spreading it to other animals or humans.
Humans handling the contaminated treats or any surfaces that came into contact with the product are also at risk. Salmonella infection in humans can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (including bloody diarrhea), abdominal cramping, and fever. In rare cases, it may lead to more severe complications such as arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, and muscle pain. Anyone who experiences these symptoms after handling the product should consult a healthcare provider.
