The Food And Drug Administration reports a multistate outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections which has prompted a nationwide recall of frozen supplemental shakes manufactured by Prairie Farms Dairy Inc. in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The recalled products, sold under the brands Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial, were distributed to institutional settings such as hospitals and long-term care facilities (LTCFs). As of February 24, 2025, the outbreak has resulted in 38 reported illnesses across 21 states, with 37 hospitalizations and 12 deaths.
Recall Details
On February 22, 2025, Lyons Magnus LLC issued a recall for 4 oz. Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial Frozen Supplemental Shakes. The products were distributed to foodservice customers nationwide, including hospitals and LTCFs. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in collaboration with state and local partners, are investigating the outbreak.
During an onsite inspection at the Prairie Farms facility in Fort Wayne, Indiana, FDA officials collected environmental and product samples. Three environmental swabs from the processing area tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. Whole Genome Sequencing analysis confirmed that the strain of Listeria found in these samples is closely related to the strain causing the current outbreak.
Symptoms of Listeriosis
Listeria infections can cause symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, nausea, tiredness, vomiting, and diarrhea. In severe cases, symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Symptoms typically appear within two weeks after consuming contaminated food but can occur as early as the same day or as late as 10 weeks after exposure.
Pregnant women, newborns, adults aged 65 or older, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at the highest risk of severe illness. Pregnant women may experience mild symptoms, but Listeria infection during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or life-threatening infection of the newborn.
- Institutions: Distributors and foodservice customers, including hospitals and LTCFs, should immediately stop selling or serving the recalled products. Any surfaces or containers that came into contact with the recalled shakes should be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized to prevent cross-contamination.
- Consumers: If you or a family member experience symptoms of listeriosis, contact a healthcare provider immediately.
Listeria can survive in refrigerated temperatures and easily spread to other foods and surfaces. The FDA advises following safe handling and cleaning practices to reduce the risk of cross-contamination. The FDA and CDC continue to investigate the outbreak and monitor for additional cases. Consumers and institutions are urged to check for recalled products and follow the FDA’s guidelines to ensure safety.
