(Source : AP ) Mysterious drone sightings over New Jersey and surrounding areas have sparked growing concerns among residents and officials, prompting investigations by the FBI, Homeland Security and State Police.
Large, unidentified drones—some up to six feet in diameter—have been reported flying over parts of New Jersey and neighboring states since mid-November. According to state lawmaker Dawn Fantasia, who was briefed by Homeland Security officials, these drones appear to avoid detection by traditional methods such as helicopters or radio, and some even fly with their lights turned off. The drones, larger than those typically used by hobbyists, have been seen in areas near sensitive locations, including the Picatinny Arsenal military facility and President-elect Donald Trump’s golf course in Bedminster.
The sightings have raised questions about the origin and purpose of the drones. Fantasia, a Morris County Republican, noted that these drones are not believed to be operated by hobbyists. Local officials and residents are concerned, especially since the drones are flying in restricted airspace, prompting discussions about stricter regulations for drone operations in the state.
While most of the drone sightings have been reported at night, the number of incidents has continued to rise in recent weeks. The FBI has been investigating and asked residents to share any photos, videos, or other information they may have. Despite the growing number of sightings, officials have emphasized that the drones do not appear to pose an immediate threat to public safety.
State and local law enforcement agencies, including the Coast Guard, are also involved in the investigation. The Coast Guard reported an incident over the weekend in which multiple drones followed a Coast Guard lifeboat near Barnegat Light in Ocean County, though the drones did not interfere with operations.
The FBI has assured the public that the drones are not believed to be part of any foreign adversary’s activities, though authorities remain unclear about who is behind the flights or what their intentions might be. Some lawmakers, including U.S. Reps. Chris Smith and Jeff Van Drew, have called for military intervention, suggesting that the drones could be shot down, particularly if they continue to violate airspace regulations. However, Pentagon officials have stated that there is no evidence to suggest the drones are a national security threat.
In response to the surge in sightings, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has imposed temporary flight restrictions in the area while investigations continue. Several local lawmakers, including Assemblyman Erik Peterson, are pushing for stricter drone regulations, with some calling for a temporary ban on drone flights in the state.
As investigations progress, residents remain on edge, unsure of who is behind the flights or why they are taking place. “It raises concern mainly because there’s so much that’s unknown,” said James Edwards, a local resident who has spotted drones near his neighborhood. “We need to wait and see what is really happening here, not let fear of the unknown overtake us.”
Started almost four days ago, the mystery surrounding the drones continues, with authorities urging the public to remain vigilant and report any further sightings or relevant information.
